PLAYER ANALYSIS: George Moncur

A new signing at last!

Our first new addition ahead of a return to the Championship comes in the shape of midfielder George Moncur, recently released by Luton Town.

Moncur’s most common position is in the centre of midfield, playing there 199 times out of his 324 career appearances (136 central midfield, 53 attacking midfield and 10 defensive midfield). However, he has featured 37 times on the left and right of midfield (27 & 10 respectively).

After a couple of loan spells at AFC Wimbledon and Partick Thistle, as well as winning West Ham’s “Young Hammer of The Year” in 2013, his most successful spell in terms of goal contributions came during a 2-year period at Colchester United. Accumulating 23 goals and assists for The U’s. Moncur also scored the goal which ensured survival for Colchester in League One back in 2015.

Afterwards, a 3-year spell at Barnsley gave Moncur his first taste of Championship football, and in his first season he would score 2 goals in 12 appearances. During this season he was also sent on loan to Peterborough United , managed then by Grant McCann.

In his following two seasons for Barnsley, he would accumulate 16 goal contributions before moving to Luton Town.

Here is Barnsley fan @mh_bfc’s overall assessment of Moncur’s time at Oakwell;

“He tries to run at the defence and wants to have a shot at goal when he gets the chance. Technically very good player who could come in clutch when he needs to. Very good on free kicks outside the box too.”

“Rated him very highly when he played and was on his game, however, he does have an attitude that makes you believe he thinks he’s better than he is which is why he became more of a bench player for us. But if you can get the best out of him you have a very good player on your hands there”

In his first half a season at Kenilworth Road, the midfielder would score 6 times in 14 appearances as The Hatters won League One, including two against Oxford which secured the trophy.

In the last two Championship seasons, the midfielder has scored 4 goals in 38 league apperances as Luton pulled off a miraculous escape from relegation before finishing 12th last season. The midfielder also had a successful pass completion % of 86.5 last season, albeit with quite a few substitute appearances

Here is @LTFC_Dave‘s thoughts on Moncur’s time with The Hatters, as well as what we can expect;

“Despite being at Luton for 2.5 years, Moncur only made 51 appearances for The Hatters, with plenty of those coming from the bench and scoring an impressive 11 goals in that time.”

“Primarily GM is an attacking midfielder, although he did feature as a winger on occasions for Luton last season. He will bring plenty of creative flair, but issues remain over his ability to play for a full 90 minutes so it’ll be interesting to see how many starts he’ll get at Hull.”

“Whilst a lot of Luton fans are seemingly distraught at him leaving, and felt he should’ve been offered a new contract. I do think that lower-end of the Championship is probably as good as it gets for him.”
