PLAYER ANALYSIS: Andy Cannon

Another day, another signing & and another midfielder.

On Wednesday afternoon, City announced our second summer addition in the form of midfielder Andy Cannon.

Cannon joins The Tigers after leaving Portsmouth at the close of the 2020/21 season on an initial two-year contract.

His last season with Pompey saw him feature 43 times, with the majority of his appearances as a central midfielder (28), but he did feature 4 times as a more attack-minded midfielder, accumulating 2 goals and 3 assists in League One with an added two assists in the FA Cup. In his two other seasons with the club , there was only one more goal to his name , and he leaves the South Coast after featuring 79 times.

Despite being more well-known for his spell at Portsmouth, Cannon also spent 5 years at Rochdale. His first career appearance came on 27th September 2014 against Leyton Orient and his first goal came on 6th August 2016 against Peterborough United who were then managed by Grant McCann. His impressive performances, such as being Man of the Match in a famous FA Cup draw vs Spurs in 2018 led to his £150,000 move two years ago.

It will be interesting to see where Cannon fits into the current system, especially with Regan Slater linked with a possible return to City as well as the initial midfield quality of Docherty & Honeyman. This signing does seem to typify Ehab Allam’s comments about “punching above our weight”

I spoke to Portsmouth fan @s_mlewispfc about Cannon’s time at Portsmouth, and what we can expect from the midfielder.

“What you can expect from him is 100% effort. On his Portsmouth debut I remember how much he stood out for the amount of energy he had, and how much work he put in.”

“He can play CM or CAM. But, what I would say is he never got many goals or assists.”

“I am surprised he’s playing in the Championship, but I hope it all goes well for him.”

“The most important thing is he’s an incredibly nice bloke. Before he left, he went around to a load of Pompey fans’ houses and dropped off signed shirts, and just had a nice chat etc.”
